Majority Leader Aden Duale Reveals Why His Son Can't Work in County Governments

Majority Leader Aden Duale on Tuesday indicated that he cannot allow his son to work for the County governments.

The Garissa Township MP made the revelation when moving a bill seeking to streamline the operations of the devolved units.

"I don't even think I can allow my son to work for a county government. They don't even have offices," Duale decried.

Duale exuded confidence that the bill would also help in entrenching the role of County deputy speakers after the court ruled that the Murang'a County Speaker was illegally in office.

"The other county speakers are in dismay since the Murang'a incident. Their fate hangs on the balance and this will be resolved by the bill," Duale added.

The legislators further raised concern over the increasing cases of impeachment of County Assembly speaker.

The MPs opined that the onslaught on the Speakers in Nyandarua, Nairobi, Migori and Homa Bay counties appeared to be a well-choreographed change of tact from an earlier wave to oust several governors.

MP David Ole Sankok further indicated that lack of structure in the counties had exposed county funds to corruption.

"There has been so much focus on the corruption in the national government. But I can assure you if you turn to the county governments, the corruption happening there can shock even the devil," Sankok stated.

The MPs noted how Nairobi County had stayed for months without a Deputy Governor - a loophole that the new bill seeks to seal.

Besides, they expressed concern that deputy governors and deputy county speakers have been turned into "flower girls" due to lack of a specific mandate.
