Governor Mike Sonko Shortlists Jane Weru & Karen Nyamu as Nairobi Deputy Governor Candidates

Two female candidates have been short-listed as front-runners for the position of Nairobi deputy governor after Governor Mike Sonko dropped two others.

On Friday, Governor Sonko stated that he had dropped former Starehe MP Margaret Wanjiru and gender activist and insurance executive Agnes Kagure.

The governor announced that lawyers Karen Nyamu and Jane Weru had the highest chances of being nominated as the next Nairobi DG in a few weeks.

Ms Nyamu sought to vie for the Nairobi Woman Rep seat but lost to Rachel Shebesh during the Jubilee nomination exercise in 2017 elections.

Jane Weru is the executive director of Akiba Mashinani Trust, a non-profit organization that deals with housing development & finance.

Governor Sonko reportedly received a list of 10 names before picking the four candidates for Nairobi deputy governor.

Reports had indicated that the Nairobi Governor was still consulting with the Jubilee Party leadership before submitting the name of the final candidate for vetting and approval by the County Assembly.

The initial nomination of deported lawyer Miguna Miguna for Nairobi deputy governor on May 17, 2018, was rejected by the Nairobi County Assembly.

According to the Assembly, Miguna’s nomination was rejected on grounds that his Kenyan citizenship was revoked.

Sonko had nominated Miguna to replace Polycarp Igathe, who resigned in January citing a strained work relationship with the Nairobi County boss.
