Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i on Friday revealed that holders of various degrees would be targeted in the next phase of police recruitment in a bid to further professionalize the service.
The new cadre of cadet officers will consist of trained experts focused on specific fields.
Among others, police are looking for holders of at least Upper Second Division degrees in ICT, law, medicine, engineering, education and psychology.
Matiang'i stated that professionals would also be recruited to work in the new forensics laboratory in Nairobi.
“We have established an ultra-modern Crime Research Centre backed with a Forensic Laboratory that needs highly trained professionals that are fully dedicated to the Police Service.
"We are also keen on promoting the officers’ welfare in various areas including their housing to enable them to serve with the assurance that they have decent shelter for their families,” he stated.
Matiang'i spoke on Friday during the launch of the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) at KCB Towers in Upperhill, Nairobi.
At the event, he also launched the Anonymous Reporting Information System meant to allow Kenyans to report cases of misconduct by officers.
One sends a complaint to a toll-free code and is then assigned a tracking code.
A smartphone application for the same purpose was unveiled as well.
