Kipchoge Keino Walks Free as DPP Noordin Haji Withdraws Corruption Case

Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji on Friday officially withdrew graft charges facing athletics legend Kipchoge Keino.

The former National Olympic Committee chief agreed to become a state witness as investigators look into the misappropriation of at least Sh55 million during the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Keino had been charged alongside former Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario.

A section of politicians publicly called for charges against Kipchoge to be dropped owing to his exploits for Kenya on the track.

In October, it emerged that Keino would likely not plead to charges of corruption despite surrendering himself to police.

Other than Wario, Keino had been grilled along with former director of administration Haron Komen and former finance officer Patrick Kimithi Nkabu at Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Headquarters for more than 10 hours.

Keino, a two-time Olympic Gold medalist, was implicated alongside five former government and national Olympic committee officials in the mismanagement of funds meant for athletes.

The incident sparked a massive uproar among Kenyans after it was revealed that many athletes were lacking necessities including training kits which had fallen into the hands of senior officials.

Keino had argued that he was not a signatory when the funds were paid, asserting that he was focused on the team.

"My role as the chairman of the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) was to make sure that the teams were catered for during their preparations for the Rio Olympic Games,"  he told AFP.

He was accused of abuse of office by improperly conferring benefits amounting to over Sh5.9 million to various people among them lawyer James Gitau Singh, Adan Omar Enow, Richard Abura, Eunice Kerich, Samuel Njuguna, Monica Nkina Sairo among others, to attend the games.
