Members of Parliament have hatched a plan to get lavish Privileges in order “to discharge their duties effectively.”
Parliamentary Service Bill set for debate on Tuesday proposes better terms of service for the legislators who are among the best paid in the world.
The bill is partly based on recommendations of the National Assembly Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs.
The Committee tabled the report in parliament last Thursday.
All the 416 MPs and speakers of both houses will each get a government vehicle, rent-free house, travel allowances, expanded medical cover and expanded constituency outreach operation, if the Bill becomes law.
On top of Kshs20 million mortgage facility that each MP gets, they also want to be given official residences or suitable house allowance in line with the Employment Act.
They are also asking for government vehicles and car loans on top of mileage allowance and Kshs7 million car grant they all receive.
The report also recommends enhanced medical covers that will include their extended families.
Parliamentary Service Bill proposes the allowance for those who travel outside the country to be dictated by the foreign country visited.
“To enable the members discharge their responsibilities effectively and efficient functioning of parliament, these services and facilities shall be provided in such a manner and such rates as the commission may determine from time to time taking into account the rate applicable for other state officers,” the report reads in part.
