Kenyans Warned Again Racket Selling Redeemable Coupons

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the National Police Service have appealed to Kenyans to be on the watch out for conmen stealing through the selling of coupons.

The DCI, in a public announcement, stated that the gang is led by one John Mwaura who identifies himself as an overseer of the Christ Love International Ministry.

Mwaura and his accomplices extort unsuspecting members of the public in the pretext of selling them coupons with redeemable prizes.

The fraudsters fled Nairobi CBD early this year after the arrest of Mwaura but have since returned and were on Wednesday spotted in town along Moi Avenue preying on unsuspecting Kenyans.

"Before his arrest earlier this year, the team was using a motor vehicle with registration No. KBY 546M but the information in our possession indicates that they are using a different one this time around," cautioned the DCI on Wednesday.

The team was luring unsuspecting victims and those who fell victim bought tickets and redeemed prizes that the DCI says are nonexistent.

Kenyans have been cautioned to remain vigilant and inform the police in case they sight the racketeers anywhere.

33-year-old Peter Gitau, a resident of Githurai area in Nairobi is a member of Mwaura's team. He was arrested after members of the public informed the police of the return of the fraudsters.

Gitau will be presented in Court on Thursday.
