Women Sue Inspector General Joseph Boinnet Over Sons’ Deaths

Several Nairobi women have filed a lawsuit against Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet and Attorney General Paul Kihara Kariuki over alleged extrajudicial killings of their sons and husbands.

In their lawsuit filed at the High Court, the 22 women accused the state of failure to properly investigate the killings with the outcome not yet known.

Through their lawyer Ruth Kihuria, the women explained to the court that the state had not taken adequate measures to ensure that the alleged extrajudicial killing cases are not repeated.

It is our contention that the state has not taken adequate steps to adopt adequate positive measures to prevent further killings of individuals during police or law enforcement operations,” stated Kihuria.

The women narrated the circumstances through which their relatives' lives were cut short demanding that the office of the IG be compelled to carry out conclusive investigations.

They also demanded that the AG is compelled to create a judicial commission that is tasked with primarily investigating the use of force by police and probe into the extrajudicial killing cases.

Among those listed as interested parties in the case are the Directorate of Public Prosecutions, Kenya National Commission on Human Rights and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).

The court documents further revealed that most cases involved males age between 15 and 35 with other cases affecting minors.

The case is set for mention on January 23, 2018.
