An elderly mother’s gesture that showed love for her son moved a KDF recruiting commander to offer the son a slot in the ongoing recruitment.
The woman, who was only identified as Jane, had walked 21 kilometres from her home to the recruiting centre in Longisa, Bomet County.
Jane caught the eye of an officer when she unknowingly staggered into a restricted area which prompted the soldiers to question her.
"Nimekuja kumpa kijana yangu moyo apate kazi. Ni yeye tu pekee yake niko naye (I have come to give my son moral support because he is the only son I have," she replied through the help of a native who translated the soldier's question and the response to Kiswahili.
The recruitment commander asked who among the youths in attendance was her son and he stepped forward to embrace his mother, which made the situation all the more emotional.
He was struggling to hold back tears when he stated that "You did not really have to walk this far. I did not know you had plans to accompany me."
The KDF official instructed his colleagues to ensure that the young man underwent all the necessary tests for the sake of his mother’s sacrifice.
The young man was successfully recruited to KDF and the woman did not have to walk the long stretch back home but was dropped home in one of the military vehicles.
The mass recruitment drive which started on November 19 is scheduled to end on December 19, 2018.
All potential candidates are required to report to recruitment centres in the sub-counties and divisions of their respective counties at the dates announced by the KDF.
