5 Dead on Mombasa Road After Accident at Kapiti Along Mombasa Road

Five people on Monday morning lost their lives after the vehicle they were travelling in was involved in a horrific accident at Kapiti plains along Mombasa-Nairobi Highway.

Reports indicate that 13 others suffered serious injuries in the head-on collision involving a matatu and a truck.

The incident was confirmed by Machakos Deputy Director for Emergency Services Festus Kitongu with the injured being rushed to Machakos Level Five Hospital.

The victims in the matatu are said to be worshippers who were heading to Mombasa.

This comes just three days after another early morning accident occurred on the same road at Malili, involving a Toyota Probox and a Nissan note.

The Toyota Probox, which was ferrying Miraa from Nairobi, unsuccessfully overtook a truck and collided head-on with the oncoming Note whose occupants were members of the same family.

Elsewhere on Monday morning, there was another accident along Thika road involving a 14-seater matatu that lost control and plunged into a ditch after Utalii.

Luckily, the 14 occupants suffered minor injuries with one having broken his leg. However, police arrived at the scene to control traffic in order to avoid a snarl up along the busy stretch.

The conductor of the vehicle belonging to BD Travellers Sacco claimed the brakes failed causing the accident.

Some concerned citizens showed concern on Twitter, with one @bettysoniah tweeting, "Some Passengers are badly injured and they are crying for help..very disturbing scene."

Another tweep @MwathaJulia, noted, "Just passed there looks bad. Didn't know a car can fit in that small space."
