DCI Impersonators Arrested Extorting TSC CEO Nancy Macharia

Three people were, on Tuesday, arrested after being caught impersonating DCI detectives and trying to extort money from Teachers Service Commission (TSC) boss.

The three, Hillary Ngondi Kyengo, James Ndirangu Kagecha and David Mwaniki Maluki posed as DCI detectives and claimed that they were carrying out investigations at the Dr Nancy Macharia-led commission.

Three people-Hillary Ngondi Kyengo, James Ndirangu Kagecha & David Mwaniki Maluki, who were impersonating (DCI) Detectives to the CEO of the Teachers Service Commission & attempted to extort money for some purported investigations at the Commission were arrested yesterday,” posted the agency.

The three were set to be arraigned in court on Wednesday and charged with attempting to obtain money by false pretence.

On December 11, TSC issued a notice to school principals over increase in impostors claiming they could influence their appointments and transfers.

Some conmen and imposters have been calling principals and headteachers claiming to be in a position to influence appointment and transfers of heads,” read the notice.

The notice further warned the public to ignore the calls and even provided phone numbers through which the victims could verify the conmen’s claims.

Cases of impersonations especially of police officers have been on the rise recently.

In 2016, a prison warder was arrested with five handsets and several rolls of bhang among others after he impersonated Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet.

A university student, John Chebowo, was also apprehended a year later on the accusation of impersonating Boinnet and former DCI Ndegwa Muhoro online. He, however, died while in remand under mysterious circumstances.
