Bondo Headmaster Arrested for Defying CS Amina Mohamed’s Orders on Teachers Strike

A primary school headteacher in Bondo was, on Friday, arrested after defying a directive by Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed.

Samuel Aketch Angola, a headmaster of Kasau Primary school, allegedly sent the pupils home on opening day despite the court annulling a planned teacher’s strike.

Nyanza Regional Commissioner Moffat Kangi revealed that several headteachers from the region had defied the directive.

The misconduct by the headteacher is an infringement of children's right to education and an affront on government policies,” stated Kangi.

CS Amina had directed that all schools would open on January 3 despite a Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) planned strike for the same day.

Also arrested was the area assistant chief Margret Anyango Ochinga who was accused of failing to keep the school open.

"In view of this misconduct, the government yesterday effected the arrests of Agola and Ochinga to record statements with the police and be processed for prosecution," continued Kangi.

The two were taken to Bondo Police Station and are set to record statements.

In his ruling in a case between Teacher’s Service Commission (TSC) and KNUT, Judge Byram Ongaya directed teachers to end strike and report to work.

He further directed the two to find a way to iron out issues which also involved a contested plan by TSC to transfer teachers which had caused a deadlock.
