Error That Could Affect Your 2018 Tax Returns - KRA Warns

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) on Wednesday warned Kenyans of an error that was likely to affect their 2018 tax returns.

In an advertisement placed on a local daily, the taxman noted how discrepancies between the purchase invoices and sales invoices would lead to rejection of such entries.

"Taxpayers are therefore reminded to ensure that entries in their 2018 VAT returns reflect a true and correct position of taxpayers business transactions for the period," the notice read in part.

Informing the public of its plan to continue with the verification of VAT returns, KRA urged taxpayers to take part through the automated returns verification module in the iTax System.

All taxpayers are reminded to ensure purchase invoices used for input claims should be valid and the amount thereon be correctly claimed as provided under section 17 of VAT Act 2013.

"Also ensure that only sales to taxpayers not registered for VAT should be lumped in the last row of the 'Sales' section of the VAT return in the iTax system.

"The invoice details are correctly captured including the Invoice Number, Date of Invoice, PIN of Purchaser or seller, and the amount of Invoice," KRA stated.

Kenyans were also asked to verify details of invoices filed including the Invoice Number, Date of Invoice, PIN of Purchaser or seller, and the amount of Invoice.

Those affected by the inconsistencies will be notified and be given a total of 30 days to rectify pending further assessment by the authority.

Taxpayers who need assistance in relation to the matter were further advised to seek support through KRA centres countrywide or through phone and email.
