Harrison Muiruri, former TNA Party chairman, Nakuru branch, was on Friday found guilty of obtaining Ksh500,000 from Elizabeth Wambui, an MCA aspirant.
Senior Resident Magistrate Yvonne Khatambi ordered that Muiruri be sentenced to 16 months in prison.
While giving the ruling, she stated that the court needed to impose a deterrent sentence since cases of fraud had become rampant in the county.
“I have carefully considered the nature of the offense and mitigation by the accused. The court has also taken into consideration the pre-sentence report. It was unfavorable to the accused,” Khatambi stated.
Magistrate Khatambi further imposed a Ksh 200,000 fine on Muiruri.
Records indicate that Muiruri had convinced Wambui that he was in a position to make her an MCA through the Jubilee party.
However, Wambui gave her testimony stating that she wanted to vie as an MCA for Menengai West Ward.
She added that the accused took her through the registration process where she was supposed to pay the amount.
“I approached TNA chairman two days before the incident and he directed me to the accused, who was the immediate former chair for assistance,” she told the court.
Muiruri was accused of obtaining the amount at Barnabas in Nakuru on August 18, 2017.
Elsewhere, a Kajiado High Court Judge Reuben Nyakundi, on Wednesday ordered the state to pay Ksh 6.8 Million in compensation to 20 people for unlawful arrests.
While making the ruling, Justice Nyakundi faulted the police for unfairly infringing on their rights as arrested persons.
The judge ordered that each of the 19 people be paid Ksh100,000 as general compensation and a similar amount as exemplary damages.
