Boy Turned Away From Starehe After School Claims Parent Was Rude

A Form One student from Isiolo County was denied admission by Starehe Boys School administration over claims that the father was rude.

The school management insisted that the student would not be allowed to study at the institution with the administration accusing his father of behaving inappropriately and failing to meet admission procedures.

On the other hand, David Babu and his wife Christine Ngare, the boy's parents, could not understand why the school was unwilling to accept their son who was selected through the National Education Management Information System (NEMIS).

“We were chased out like we were conmen, I am embarrassed and so disappointed,” Mr. Babu lamented.

The student who scored 417 marks, together with his parents have been forced to spend in a Nairobi Hotel for the past 10 days awaiting admission.

The parents had the placement letter from the Ministry of Education, a receipt of Ksh.70,000 for fee payment made to the school’s account and a tag used to gain entrance to Starehe but still efforts to secure admission for their son were futile.

Speaking to Citizen TV, acting Centre Director Josphat Mwaura, noted that the child had not been selected to join the school, but was merely one of 24 students that had been recommended for consideration by the ministry.

He added that the school admitted 23 and left out Babu’s child after the parents failed to fill requisite forms.

"All students joining the school must fill out the forms by July of the previous year," alluded Mwaura.

When contacted, Nairobi Regional Coordinator in charge of education John Olootual reiterated that the ministry had taken up the matter.

This comes after Olympic High School declined to admit a student, Makeda Ndinda, for having dreadlocks. Education CS Amina Mohamed, however, directed the school's management to readmit the girl.
