How Wife Helped Mahir Khalid Riziki Evade Arrest for 5 Years

Dusit suicide bomber Mahir Khalid Riziki managed to stay under the radar for close to 5 years with the help of his wife.

Standard reports that Suhaila Mwalim Bakari, who was arrested by officers from the Anti-Terror Police Unit (ATPU) on Saturday, was a close confidant of the terrorist.

She gave him an ear when he needed someone to talk to about the problems he was facing in Somalia.

Riziki has been on the most wanted list since 2014 when he was accused of being behind the wave of killings at the Kenyan Coast.

After the 2015 Garissa University attack that left 147 students dead, police launched a manhunt for Riziki after being named as one of the masterminds.

Most of his accomplices in the institution’s attack were either killed or arrested. However, the 25-year-old man still managed to get away.

All this time, Ms. Bakari knew where Riziki was as they did not sever ties when he relocated to Somalia and joined Al Shabaab.

However, she failed to inform the police about the whereabouts of Riziki – who had a KShs2 Million bounty on his head.

Detectives claim the woman failed to inform authorities of the terrorist’s movement when he sneaked into the country late last year as part of a cell that was planning attacks in Mombasa.

It is, however, still not clear whether Ms. Bakari became radicalized or was protecting a man whom she once loved.
