A Kenyan athlete Cosmas Kiplimo Lagat has set a record at the 16th Mumbai Marathon in India.
Lagat, who is a former Seville Marathon winner, won the race on Sunday after clocking 2:09:15 and consequently pocketing Ksh4.5 million.
His winning time became the second best record in the entire 16-year history of the Marathon.
Lagat started splitting up from the leading pack just before hitting 29km by creating a significant gap between himself and his rivals.
Speaking to the media, Lagat confessed that although energetic, he covered the final 10km of the race in fear.
"It was a good moment to make a break, but I also knew there were good runners behind me.
"From 35km, I was never sure how close they were to me or whether they were coming back to me," he added.
His record came second after Gideon Kipketer's 2:08:35 in the 2016 Mumbai Marathon which remains unchallenged.
During the Sunday's race, Ethiopia’s Aychew Bantie and Aklnew Shumet finished second and third respectively with times of 2:10:05 and 2:10:14.
In the women’s race, Ethiopia’s Worknesh Alemu won after clocking 2:25:45 drawing close to the 2013 record set by Kenya’s Valentine Kipketer who clocked 2:24:33.
Kenyan long-distance runner Eliud Kipchoge holds the world marathon record by clocking ran 2:01:39 at the Berlin Marathon becoming the first person in history to go under 2:02:00.
