Detectives have shed more light on slain activist Caroline Mwatha's case disclosing the last text messages to her alleged lover Alexander Gitau before and after reportedly procuring an abortion.
According to the police, Mwatha was in constant communication with Gitau as she sought medical assistance from New Njiru Community Centre in Dandora Phase four.
On Tuesday night, the activist allegedly texted the man, who police believe to be the boyfriend, confirming that she would head to the Centre on Wednesday morning.
“Niko poa no worries but kesho lazima nirauke hossy aki usiku ndio nalemewa mbaya plus homa bt all will be ok ave a lovely day ahead n tkecare bbie, Miss uuu (sic) (I'm fine but tomorrow I must go to the hospital early. I'm unwell in addition to a cold but I will be okay. Have a lovely day and take care)," her text read.
In the texts, Mwatha revealed that she was five months pregnant and the doctors at the Centre had agreed to abort the baby.
The attendant stated that the pregnancy was too far along as it was already five months old and asked for Ksh7,000 but she managed to negotiate to Ksh6,000.
The activist was allegedly injected with a drug to induce labour pains and was to return in the evening for the procedure to be completed.
On the Wednesday before she was reported missing, Mwatha confirmed that she had been 'treated' but she was scheduled to return later to flush out the remaining bits.
"Naskia tu baridi kwa wingi kutoka juzi nimekuwa naumwa sijakula anything but nahope by 4-5 kila kitu itakuwa sawa. Anyway just continue praying that all goes well (I'm just really cold and I have pains. I haven't been able to eat anything but I hope everything will be fine. Just continue praying that all goes well)" the text sent at 5:25pm read.
She further told Gitau that she had even managed to go to Barma market to purchase some meat products.
The message read, "Nilienda Bamaa kubuy Maini, nyama na mifupa za supuu nisharudi ndio nataka kurudi hossy tena tu nimechoka uchungu kiasi bt naenda kumaliziwa akin y we will take later nikishamaiziwa thnx don’t worry too much all will be ok thnc (sic)
(Which loosely translates to, I went to Barma market to buy liver, meat and some bones for soup. I want to go back to the hospital. I am tired and have a lot of pain but I will go to finish up. Don't worry too much, I will be fine)."
