Rare Glimpse Into Life of Former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga

The children of former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga have given the public a glimpse into the life of the man who headed Kenya's Judiciary before handing over the reins to David Maraga.

Shamilla Mutunga and Wali Mohammed 'Al-Amin' Mutunga, the ex-CJ's second and third born, described their childhood experiences in an interview with The Standard

They revealed that they had an ordinary upbringing, occasionally referring to their father as Ba or simply Willy.

According to Al-Amin, Mutunga is a lighthearted man. When he's not working, you'll find him watching Mr. Bean and laughing his heart out.

The former President of the Supreme Court also loves Bollywood movies and Indian music so much so that if you borrow a DVD from him and forget to return it, he will call to remind you.

When it comes to football, Mutunga does not support a specific team as is the case with most people.

Instead, he rallies behind players. For example, if Messi was playing, Mutunga would not miss the game for anything.

When asked what changed when their father became the chief justice, his children revealed that they had a chance to rub shoulders with the high and mighty and travel a lot.

While Shamilla admires the former CJ's humility, his son wishes he was half the man that Mutunga is because of his resilience.

Since Al-Amin is also an advocate for social change, through photography, he always talks to his father when he is on the verge of giving up.

Mutunga always encourages him to stay on course while giving an example of how he fought for a new constitution since his university days but it only materialized in 2010.
