The National Security Council (NSC) chaired by President Uhuru Kenyatta has been holding a series of meetings in recent weeks to discuss who will replace police IG Joseph Boinnet.
According to Daily Nation, the council has selected a number of candidates from the National Police Service (NPS) and security agencies as possible successors.
Boinnet was sworn into office on March 11, 2015.
High placed sources within the NPS disclosed that DCI George Kinoti, Deputy Inspector-General Edward Mbugua and Noor Gabow are being considered for the position.
Former National Counter Terrorism Centre Director Isaac Ochieng and General Service Unit Commandant Douglas Kanja are also in the list.
Director of Corporate Communications Charles Owino and the Police Training College Commandant Kingóri Mwangi were also mentioned as some of the potential candidates for the position.
An Assistant Inspector-General stationed at Vigilance House mentioned that officers preferred the appointment of an insider who understands the service well.
On Tuesday, Uhuru appointed Eliud Kinuthia to succeed Johnston Kavuludi as National Police Service Commission (NPSC) chairman.
He also also appointed Lilian Kiamba, Eusebius Laibuta, Naphtaly Rono, Alice Otwala and John ole Moyaki members of the commission.
If approved by the National Assembly, they will serve for five years
