Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has spruced up the lion statue along University Way that caused a heated debate on social media on Wednesday.
City dwellers who were heading to work on Saturday could help but snap away upon noticing that the sculpture had been changed.
The statue elicited mixed reaction from Nairobians, many claimed that it had been poorly sculptured since they could not tell whether it was a lion, a tiger or some other animal.
Others wondered why the governor wasted taxpayers' money on such a funny-looking sculpture.
Kenyans on Twitter (KOT) criticized Sonko for subjecting Nairobians to ridicule instead of beautifying the city.
Cess Mutungi wrote, "What is going wrong with our Kamba brother?”
Kibet Yegon tweeted, "Lion that looks like he's contemplating hard economic times aside. How about just Nairobi City or Nairobi County and not Nairobi City County...Sonko is so extra!"
Njeri Maina posted, "Even the lion himself appears not convinced he's a lion."
It seems these sentiments got to the first-term governor as he changed the statue when Nairobians were deep in slumber.
People who were going about their activities early Saturday morning came across the new sculpture. Most of them seemed to agree that it looked better than the previous one.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke on phone, Nairobi County Communications Director Jacob Elkana revealed that the statue had not been replaced as earlier alleged by some sections of the media.
He explained that the person who had been working on it was on a break when the first was taken. The sculptor, however, resumed work after five days and finished the statue.
