KWS Lights Up Social Media With Controversial Image

The Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) on Wednesday lit up social media after sharing a controversial image that went viral.

KWS showed two rhinos copulating at the Nairobi National Park against the backdrop of the city's skyline.

"What's a Wednesday afternoon timeline without a little romp? Talk about Sex and the City! #DiscoverNairobiNationalPark," the government agency tweeted.

Although the photo showed a normal scene at the only national park on earth bordering a capital city, netizens appeared to be startled by KWS's departure from the uptight, corporate approach.

The controversy was catalysed further by the recent onslaught by Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) CEO Ezekiel Mutua against publishing of explicit content.

"Where is Dr.Ezekiel Mutua ? Please someone call polis (sic)," Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen tweeted.

"Shame on you at KWS. Kenya is a conservative society. Ezekiel Mutua what say you? (sic)" Economist David Ndii posed.

In a thread that would soon turn hilarious, KWS advised Kenyans against inviting the KFCB CEO, a self-declared moral police, on their case.

Replying to one Dennis Murithi who had opined that the agency would be in trouble once Mutua got whirlwind of the tweet, KWS replied on a light note, "Uh-oh, Dennis. Snitches get stitches".

But the numerous tweets and sarcastic trolls finally got the attention of the KFCB boss! But he did not come blazing guns but instead joined in the fun.

A seemingly amused Mutua tweeted, "RATED FOR ADULTS ONLY! Wacha wanyama wajienjoy (Let the animals have fun)".

When one Lydiah Kinyanjui suggested that whoever was administering the KWS social media page was likely under some influence, KWS responded "Imagine admin ako tu sawa (The admin is doing okay). Tembeeni park mtambue (visit the park and learn) how we go about rhino conservation including their breeding performance".

KWS charges an entry fee of Ksh430 (adult Kenyans) and Ksh215 (children/students) for a single entry valid for 24 hours of continuous uninterrupted stay inside the Nairobi National Park.

Here are more reactions to the tweet that garnered over 1,000 retweets, 2,000 likes and countless replies.
