Legislators are losing millions of shillings to conmen, a report by Nation has revealed.
According to the publication, Members of Parliament are being led into dubious schemes where they are forced to part with their hard-earned money.
Lawmakers are forced to contribute money to various schemes including non-existent funerals, fake hospital bills and what not.
Just recently, Mbita MP Mille Odhiambo was hoaxed into contributing money for a funeral in her constituency only to discover that there was no funeral in the first place.
“It is very sad. In one instance, my representatives arrived at a home to say pole to a guy personally known to me for losing his son. The family was shocked to learn that it was supposedly bereaved.
“I attended another one myself only to discover that there was no funeral. However, you learn to take it easy. I was told that part of leadership is accepting that you must be conned frequently,” she narrated.
Other MPs also revealed that they had lost thousands of shillings to people who were posing as constituents who need help.
Maragwa MP disclosed that she was conned of Ksh 5000 by a woman who claimed that she was the county director of education.
“She called me and introduced herself as Faith, apparently the first name of the director is also Faith. She said they were taking lunch and she was supposed to settle the bill but had just realized that she did not carry enough money. I sent her the money,” she narrated.
Joash Nyamoko, the MP for Mugirango North, revealed how he almost parted with KSh. 60,000 to help a constituent clear a mortuary bill.
Kipkelion West MP Hilary Koskei revealed that he almost lost Ksh 70,000 to a man who had lied that he had a patient at Tenwek Hospital.
He wrote a cheque and gave it to his driver. On the way to the hospital, the man disappeared.
