The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has revealed that there are 9 university courses that did not receive even a single application from the over 90,000 potential students who qualified for university by attaining a grade of C+ and above in last years KCSE.
The announcement sparked the age-old debate of relevance of some university courses that were being offered with Education CS Professor George Magoha accusing universities of focusing on business more than their scholarly duties.
In what is thought to be the lack of appeal in the job market the 9 courses were all rejected by the potential students.
The Bachelor of Theology, Social Work, and Community development are among the courses rejected by the applicants.
The other courses were Technology in Mechanical Ventilation and Air conditioning, Arts in Peace and Conflict Studies and Business Administration did not attract any applicants.
Bachelor of Science (Aquatic Resources Conservation and Development with Information Technology), Bachelor of Science (Natural products) and Bachelor of Science (Environment and Resource Management) were also among the rejected courses.
“This situation must be addressed. The Commission for University Education must conduct a thorough analysis of these courses including a review and scrapping of such courses,” emphasized Professor Magoha.
No applicants were selected to join 98 other courses because they either did not qualify to be admitted for the course or were placed in their other choices.
Among the 98 programmes with nil placements were Bachelor of Arts in Development Studies, Applied Linguistics, Translations and Interpretations, and Gender and Development.
In the Bachelor of Science category there was no placements in Geography Information Science, Bachelor of Arts in Childcare and Protection, Catering and Hotel Management, Biblical Studies, Church Educational Ministries, Pastoral Theology, Youth Ministry and Human Nutrition and Dietetics.
