Fired Teacher Who Defied Odds to Open Top Private University

Mount Kenya University (MKU) founder, Dr Simon Gicharu was once fired by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) but defied all odds to open the top private University.

On his Twitter page, Gicharu narrated that he was fired in 1995 by the Commission.

He noted that after he lost his job, he became a laughing stock among his friends who stated that he was a failed graduate. However, that did not put him down.

To make a living, the MKU founder started selling milk in order to support his family.

"I did my rounds in an old Chevy pickup. Friends laughed at me, calling me a 'failed graduate'. But this didn't shake me. Self-belief is the key to success,” he noted.

Netizens took to his Twitter page to congratulate him on his milestone.

"The beautiful thing with you is that you’ve taught your children to be humble despite the riches you have, you have a son who’s very humble and I see another Simon Gicharu in him. A great father!" Andy stated.

"Your 'downfall' was converted to the success of many. I managed to study while working in Mandera. Mandera is 1200 Km from Nairobi. Kudos!" Mwasbid weighed in.

Dr Gicharu is the first Class Chief of the Order of the Burning Spear (CBS) holder - the highest award a civilian can get in Kenya.

The title was accorded to him by the President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2013 for his contribution to the growth of tertiary education.
