Sonko's Flamboyant Lifestyle Comes Back to Haunt Him

Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission has stated that it is investigating Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko over the source of the money he keeps ‘splashing around’.

According to a report by Daily Nation, EACC revealed that Sonko is not known for any major investments so he has been requested to come clean over his source of wealth.

The flamboyant county head is well known for his generosity and flexing his financial muscles.

Sonko has been quoted severally stating that he has been using finances from his own bank accounts to finance the beautification of the capital.

The first-time governor is also the main sponsor of the ‘Sonko Rescue Team’ which is a charitable organization dealing with a myriad of issues affecting city residents.

EACC also mentioned that Sonko had to explain where he got the finances to build his mansion at the Mua Hills which is estimated to have cost around Ksh150 million.

The governor, who is well known for donning gold chains and rings, has never been brought down by controversies as he meets them head-on.

EACC goes on to reveal that this has been prompted by the issues found in the Nairobi county accounting books which have some irregularities.

He is on the spot after it emerged that Nairobi County had not accounted for Ksh209 million cash withdrawals from public coffers.

A further cash payment of Ksh381 million and undisclosed bank account balances amounting to Ksh3 billion are also under probe.

Sonko is further accused of flouting tender rules by not listing the tenders up for grabs in the official government website.
