A Principal Secretary from the Ministry of Transport was forced to leave a parliamentary meeting after it was established that she was performing a wrong role during the proceeding.
The Standard reported that Maritime and Shipping Affairs PS Nancy Karigithu had been invited by a section of MPs to discuss the proposed takeover of a Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) terminal.
She was specifically expected to give her input on the proposed law to transfer cargo operations at the second container terminal from KPA to Kenya National Shipping Line (KNSL).
She, however, left the meeting after it was determined that the parastatal did not fall under her docket.
Karigithu was ejected by Pokot South MP David Pkosing who had invited her to appear before the Members of the National Assembly Transport Committee.
The proposed law is contained in the Statute Law (Miscellaneous Amendment) Bill of 2019.
The changes were made specifically to the Merchants Shipping Act that when passed, will allow the Transport Cabinet Secretary to bypass a law that prevents a shipping line form running a port's operations.
The Maritime And Shipping Affairs department is, among other roles, tasked with promoting of maritime and shipping industry, registering ships in Kenya and developing a central data and information center.
Karigithu joins Parliamentary minority leader John Mbadi in the list of persons kicked out of the National Assembly proceedings.
In 2017, Mbadi was shown parliamentary doors after he claimed that the country did not have a president. His statement was met with much jeers from other MPs.
