Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has decided to go big with his promises to Kenya's national soccer team Harambee Stars.
While celebrating the success of the Kabadi team that won bronze after he financed it, the governor promised to bankroll Harambee Stars with Ksh20 million if they reach the quarterfinals of Afcon 2019.
He even vowed to sell some of his property just to honour the pledge provided they meet the target.
"Now you can take this to the bank. If Harambee Stars makes us proud by qualifying at least for the quarterfinals in the Africa cup of Nations in Egypt, I will sell one of my beach plots or take a loan against it and reward them with 20,000,000/=," vowed the governor.
He further revealed that he is a man of his word especially by honouring pledges since he joined politics. He has previously bankrolled Gor Mahia, AFC Leopards among others.
"Once more congrats to our Kabaddi team. I have never given a false promise in my leadership since I joined politics. I have been doing it for Gor Mahia, AFC Leopards and even Harambee Stars in so many occasions," he stated.
In October 2018, Sonko honoured his word by awarding Harambee Stars Ksh3 million moments after they trounced Ethiopia.
During a thrilling match at Moi Sports Center Kasarani, the Kenyan team beat Ethiopia’s Walia Ibex 3-0 in a Group F qualifying match.
According to a video published at the time, Sonko met the team at their changing rooms alongside Deputy President William Ruto, Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka among other leaders.
Sonko further revealed that the County government was forced to increase the number of buses transporting the fans to the stadium from 150 to 387 buses.
