800 Stolen Bibles Land Taxi Drivers in Court

Three taxi drivers were on Monday arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts and charged with the theft of 800 bibles.

The three Reuben Rogoi, John Mapesa, and Josphat Gatheru were accused that on May 16 at Bible translation and literacy in Upper Hill, Nairobi, obtained the bibles with intent to defraud Faith Mawia Mulunga.

They were said to have ordered for 300 pieces of New King James bibles, 200 copies of Good News Bible and 300 copies of New International version bibles all valued at Ksh920,000.

They then allegedly presented Mawia with a fake cheque pretending that it was valid for payment.

They were also charged with an alternative count of preparation to commit a felony.

The court also detained a vehicle that was in the possession of the accused’s registration number KCH 596 A, a Toyota Fielder, red in colour for use in the course of the theft of the bibles.

They denied all the charges and were released on bond as the prosecution did not object on the bail application by the defendants' lawyer.

Your honour, my clients are taxi drivers who operate along Moi Avenue, people of very humble means,” the lawyer argued.

Your honour, I submit that my clients are sole breadwinners of their respective families as such we apply for a very lenient bond and bail terms,” he added.

Milimani Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi released the three on a Ksh500,000 bond with an alternative of Ksh200,000 cash bail after affirmation that they were not a flight risk.
