NMG Reporter Beats World's Top Journalists to Win Global Award

A Kenyan reporter working with the Nation Media Group has emerged victorious beating other world's top journalists to win a prestigious award.

Rose Wangui, an NTV features reporter, was named as one of the winners of the lucrative Knight International Journalism Award for 2019 alongside two other journalists CBS News correspondent Elizabeth Palmer and Stevan Dojčinović of Serbia.

She won the prize because of her unique reports that have an impact on the society.

"The grit that Wangui has shown by reporting with a strong sense of purpose to tackle the sort of unique and taboo stories that usually get buried in headlines.

“She has been selected because her stories have led to major improvements in the conditions she brings to light," stated International Centre for Journalists (ICFJ) in a statement.

ICFJ, in the Tuesday night announcement, further stated that the winners would be presented with the award on November 7, 2019, in Washington, DC.

Wangui has tackled topics such as sexual bondage of young girls and Kenyan women who went to work in the Persian Gulf and ended up dead.

The award honours journalists who beat all odds to get stories, even during difficult situations, that brings the cases to light and effect real change.

ICFJ, which presents the annual award, is an organisation that works hand in hand with journalists to ensure that they produce quality reports that propel the society forward.

"Through our work, journalists are enhancing the news coverage and connecting more deeply with their audiences. As a result, we are increasing the flows of reliable, trustworthy news - a cornerstone of healthy democracies," reads a statement on its website.
