Tanzanian Handed 110-Year Jail Term by Kenyan Court

A Tanzanian man suspected of being a suicide bomber was on Wednesday sentenced to 110 years in jail.

The man identified as Abdul Harun Karim, was arrested three years ago in Kiwayu Island in Lamu County and was found with a recorded video that was titled 'suicide Bomber'.

The Standard newspaper reported that Karim was arrested while he was on his way to Somalia to train as a terrorist.

In his ruling, Lamu Principal Magistrate T.A. Sitati stated that the foreigner, who was facing six terrorism charges, committed a serious offence by being in Kenya yet he was a foreign fighter.

For that offence, Karim was sentenced to 30 years in prison. He was also handed 20 others for being found with the recording while headed to Somalia.

For the first two counts, however, Karim was ordered to serve the two jail terms concurrently.

The suspect was added an additional 15-year sentence for each of the other four counts that he was also facing which included collection of information.

"The prosecution has proved its case beyond reasonable doubts and I thereby convict the accused on six charges of being a foreign fighter, presumption of traveling to Somalia for the purpose being trained as a terrorist in a foreign country and collection of information contrary to prevention of terrorism law in the country.

“After completing the 30 and 20 years concurrent imprisonment, Karim will serve an additional concurrent 15 years sentence in the four counts. This is because the four counts were committed separately in advance of count 1 and 2," ruled the magistrate.

The prosecution of the case had argued that they spotted the suspect filming different places. That was when they confronted him to explain.
