Fight Between Gov Waiguru & Doctors Escalates

The fight between Kirinyaga Governor, Anne Waiguru and doctors has escalated after she announced on Friday that she would stop remittance of dues to the doctors' union, KMPDU.

Waiguru accused the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union of sabotage and undermining her leadership by asking doctors to strike.

"There is no way I can continue empowering the union which is fighting me for no good reason. The union should pursue its members and collect the dues without involving my government," Waiguru cited.

On Tuesday, doctors in the county cited that they would strike after seven days if the governor did not meet their demands.

Central KMPDU secretary general, Gor Goody stated that all health facilities would come to a standstill.

"We demand that the county employs a further 50 doctors since 22 doctors are not enough. We've also seen a situation where we have only one nurse on duty in our health facilities.

"This calls for action, failure to which we will close all the hospitals from the gates to the last department,'' Goody stated.

"We even have a nurse at the hospital who is admitted with Hepatitis B. We don't want to continue exposing our members to such conditions," she added.

The medical practitioners also demanded more casual labourers to manage waste disposal.
