4 Hospitals in Trouble For 'Causing' Death of Accident Victim

CORD leader Raila Odinga has resolved to sue four hospitals that turned down a patient leading to his death after spending 18 hours in an ambulance.

The patient, Alex Madaga was knocked down by a speeding car on Monday along Waiyaki Way. Madaga who needed urgent attention was rushed to four different hospitals but was not attended to.

Odinga instructed his lawyers to sue the hospitals that rejected Madaga citing that it was against the constitution to deny patients medical services during emergencies.

Madaga allegedly spent 18hours in an ambulance before being admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Kenyatta National Hospital as there were no available beds.

After the Monday night accident, Madaga was taken to Kikuyu Mission Hospital where doctors referred him to Kenyatta for specialised treatment since the hospital did not have an ICU.

With severe internal bleeding, he was then taken to two other hospitals, Nairobi Women's Hospital at Adam’s Arcade and Coptic Hospital where the latter rejected him demanding a cash payment of Sh200,000 before he could be admitted.

The patient was finally admitted at Kenyatta a day later where he succumbed to the injuries.

Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero also ordered investigations into public and private hospitals that do not admit emergency patients.
