ODM Boss Speak Out After Being Detained at Airport

ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna on Saturday explained why he was detained briefly at Robert Mugabe International Airport in Zimbabwe.

Sifuna had been invited to Zimbabwe to attend a function that had been organised by the country's opposition party.

However, after landing at the airport, the ODM boss was held and questioned by authorities.

Sifuna sought to clear the air over his detention while speaking during a rally that had been organized by the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) at Ascot Stadium in Gweru in Zimbabwe.

He revealed that police officers wanted to know why he was attending the function.

“They took me to a small room to ask me a few questions. I was a bit surprised because I was hoping to come to an open and democratic society that welcomes everybody regardless of who you’re coming to see.

The first question they asked me is ‘how do you know these MDC crooks?’ And I told them the MDC and my party ODM have a long history, since the times of Morgan Tsvangirayi," Sifuna explained.

He was later released after convincing the officers that he did not intend to cause trouble during his visit.

The function was also attended by Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Ugandan politician Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine.
