Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has come out to explain why DCJ Philemona Mwilu has lawyers from the party as part of her legal team.
In an interview on Radio Maisha on Monday morning, he rubbished allegations that the party had an interest in the halted proceedings against Mwilu.
He noted that the lawyers were simply her choice.
The lawyers from ODM include Senators James Orengo (Siaya) Okong’o Omogeni (Nyamira) and MPs Anthony Oluoch (Mathare), Peter Kaluma (Homa Bay Town,) and Millie Odhiambo (Suba North).
Sifuna stated that they were personally selected for their impressive work record.
“This is not ODM as the party in court and besides, the legal team is led by Khaminwa who is not even a politician.”
He further added that the situation results from the fact that the party brags of many legal practitioners, hence its supply of most of the lawyers.
Over the weekend, ODM spokesman Phillip Etale took to social media to explain the issue that had many Kenyans concerned.
“Someone asked, Why is it that NASA/ODM lawyers are the ones acting for DCJ Philemona Mwilu? I have taken the time to think about it. Here is my answer… Where else can you find fined, focussed and sharp legal minds?” he posted on Twitter.
Mwilu has assembled 32 lawyers to represent her over charges of abuse of office and graft.
Vocal Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jr is also a part of her team.
On Wednesday, Kalonzo Musyoka also joined the defence team describing her arraignment in court as an attack on the Judiciary.
