Mourners were treated to a rare scene after family members exchanged blows and kicks during a burial ceremony in Gaturi village of Kiharu constituency in Murang'a County.
The fight ensued after the uncles to Peter Njau Mwangi, the deceased, demanded to be given the burial permit, citing that they did not recognize his widow.
The deceased's uncles wanted to be issued with the burial permit and the ownership documents before the burial ceremony could kick off.
“We have never been shown the alleged wife and her child and we can’t authenticate whether the pregnancy she is carrying belongs to the deceased and as such we blocked the burial to retain the documents but they went ahead to bury him by force,” Njau, one of the uncles told Daily Nation.
However, Mwangi's mother Jerusha Wambugu was against it claiming that her son's wife, who is pregnant, had the right to keep the documents.
It was at that point that the fight ensued.
The unfortunate incident that lasted an hour, left some of the mourners with injuries.
Boda boda riders who worked with Mwangi, sneaked his body to the grave, which they had dug that morning.
The deceased was allegedly murdered last week by people who have not yet been identified.
