Why Widow Awarded Ksh 1B From Moi Dropped Quest for Cash

Susan Chelgui, the woman who was awarded Ksh1 billion, to be paid by retired President Daniel Moi for grabbing her land, is now living in fear.

She told Citizen TV reporters that since the High Court made the ruling she has had no peace.

The widow has been forced to flee from her home in fear of being attacked.

"This man is very wealthy, why did he have to take my possessions?" wondered the 85-year-old woman.

Susan also expressed that she was more interested in getting her land back over the Ksh 1 billion awarded to her.

"I'm not interested in the money, many people are but not me. I just want my soil back to divide it among my children," she spoke.

David Chelgui, one of her children, was cautious of curses that would follow if the payment of the award was made in bad faith.

"We don't want a curse to follow us because we're demanding money, we are only fighting for our deceased father's right to the land," he explained.

His other siblings joined him in the passionate plea to Moi to have mercy on them as his own children because their father was a good friend of the former president.

The 53-acre piece of land in question is said to be at a prime location within Eldoret town, Uasin Gishu County.

Moi's family is expected to file an appeal on the High Court ruling that found him guilty of grabbing the land.
