Police officers in Lamu have revealed eight individuals who they allege are the kingpins of the narcotic drug businesses in the county.
Ali Hassan Nassr, Mwalimu Omar, Mwanaisha Hassan, Kelvin Opiyo, Kelvin Kirui, Mohamed Kale, Jackson Kang’ethe, and another identified only as Munar have been put on the spot by the police.
The drug smugglers have also been ordered to surrender to authorities.
Lamu County Commissioner Joseph Kanyiri, while addressing the public in Lamu Town on Monday, rallied for public support in capturing of suspected drug peddlers.
According to Kanyiri, a massive crackdown was already ongoing in the county with a number of various notorious drug dens on the watch list.
The areas include Mtangawanda, Tchundwa, and Kizingitini in Pate Island, Lamu East Cub-county, Milano, Kashmir, Kijitoni, Gadeni and Wiyoni areas in Lamu Island.
As per the county commissioner, officers have already been deployed to hunt down the suspects across Lamu County.
“We have intensified patrols in all the drug hotspots. Drugs have destroyed the lives of many youths,” Kanyiri protested.
A recent report released by Lamu County Police Commander Muchangi Kioi indicated that most drugs are ferried by vehicles and boats from other counties to Lamu.
The police commander threatened to deal ruthlessly with any vehicle or boat found transporting narcotics adding that their licenses would be withdrawn.
