President Uhuru Kenyatta on Sunday disclosed the reason why he left the world of social media when he deactivated his accounts on March 22, 2019.
Uhuru's explanation during his angry outburst at the annual General Conference of the Akorino Churches Assembly at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, was different from the statement issued by State House Chief of Staff Nzioka Waita the day the president's accounts were deactivated.
In a charged rant, President Kenyatta told congregants that politicians kept bothering him about politics and news headlines.
"Just because you are making headlines don't think you will bother me. That is why I stopped concentrating on newspapers and social media. Let us concentrate on work," Uhuru spoke.
A few moments after the Head of State's social accounts went dark, State House insider Nzioka had explained that the deactivation was due to unauthorised access.
“On account of unauthorised access to the official social media handles of H.E the President of the Republic of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta, all official social media handles for the president have been temporarily suspended to allow for the necessary remedial measures to be undertaken," Nzioka tweeted.
When State House Spokesperson Kanze Dena appeared on another interview with Radio Maisha on May 13, she responded that "President Uhuru Kenyatta's social media accounts are his personal accounts. He has the right to activate or deactivate them as he wills. He has his reasons, and we respect that."
Before the accounts were deactivated, Uhuru had posted a strong message about fighting graft that became very controversial.
"If you are corrupt we will fight you. You can be my brother or my sister or my closest political ally, but if you are corrupt we will fight you,” asserted Uhuru.
"I won't be clouded by ethnicity or status in my quest to leave behind a united nation and I will continue championing for Kenya's unity," he added.
