Petty Thief Commits Suicide After Dramatic Police Chase

A petty thief in Nyamusi Village in Nyamira North Sub County committed suicide on Tuesday morning at around 5 am.

Oscar Monda Omosa, aged 21, swallowed pesticide to avoid arrest after police cornered him in his hideout.

Omosa was being sought by the authorities in connection to a string of robberies and theft acts that police officers from the Nyamusi AP Post were investigating.

According to the area Sub County Police Commander Timothy Muasya, the suspect had carried the pesticide with him which he consumed immediately after police netted him at his home.

Reports by The Standard showed that the officer rushed the suspect to the Nyamusi Sub County Hospital where he died while receiving treatment.

Nyamira County Commissioner Amos Mariba raised alarm over the increased number of suicides in the region.

"In a month, we are having between five and 10 people committing suicide and this is something to worry about," Mariba noted.

The commissioner, however, stated that the Tuesday morning incident was an isolated one especially being that the victim was suspect trying to evade justice.

"Most cases of suicide are common as a result of family problems but this one was different because the person involved was a suspected criminal who just wished to die than be taken to court," Mariba added.

The body of the deceased was transferred to the Nyamira County Referral Hospital Mortuary where an autopsy was expected to be done.
