DCI Goes After Hospital Over Kakamega Twin Saga

On Tuesday, the DCI boss George Kinoti declared he had summed up enough evidence to press charges against Kakamega Hospital for the mix-up of twins separated at birth, a story which has been in the headlines since April.

Even though the family insists on not suing the hospital for compensation, the DCI boss revealed that detectives have gathered evidence to pursue the case.

"We have submitted the file to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Noordin Haji for him to provide us with the way forward. We shall pursue the case until we get to the bottom of the matter," Kinoti stated.

According to Kinoti, the hospital furnished them with documents proving that both women delivered at the facility.

However, the hospital was unable to give supporting documents showing the mode of delivery and the date of birth claiming the file got lost.

The move comes a day after the families of twins Sharon Mathias and Melon Lutenyo separated at birth and their fraternal sister, Melvis Imbuya resolved to live together.

“We have forgiven the hospital and we will not seek any compensation. For even if we sue, we do not know who did the exchange of babies. We do not want to sue the wrong people,” stated Richard Olukhakha, the father of Sharon Mathias and Melon Lutenyo after an intense 4-hour meeting at Kose Heights Apartments in Nairobi on Monday.

The test, which was conducted at Lancet Kenya, revealed that Sharon Mitekwa and Melon Lutenyo are identical twins.

Their mother is Rosemary Khaveveli Onyango.

Melon was raised in Likuyani, Kakamega County, while Sharon was raised by a different woman in Kangemi, Nairobi.
