President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto joined millions of Kenyans in wishing Harambee Stars a successful tourney in Egypt as the national team gets set to launch their cup bid in the continental showpiece African Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time in 15 years.
Uhuru and Ruto stared in a catchy video advert dubbed #AfconNikoKBC, an advert that informs Kenyans to catch all Afcon matches live on the national broadcaster Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC). The two also donned the team’s jersey numbered 1.
“To our boys, we wish you the best of luck. What is most important is that you come home knowing that you did your best and gave your all. Good luck team Kenya, good luck Harambee Stars,” Uhuru passionately stated, while trying to avoid heaping pressure on the team.
“I am a very proud supporter of Harambee Stars,” Ruto enthusiastically stated.
In the video, before sending his message out, Uhuru showcases his football skills by dribbling the ball on a grass lawn, after receiving a pass from sports CS Amina Mohammed.
Joe Mucheru, Cabinet Secretary Information Communication, and Technology (ICT) and Senate Speaker Ken Lusaka also urged Kenyans to watch the matches as they support the national outfit.
On Thursday, Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga Devolution CS Eugene Wamalwa paid the national team a visit in Algeria to wish them the best of luck.
Kenya will face Algeria on June 23, Tanzania on June 27, before winding up her group stage matches against Senegal on July 1, 2019.
Despite being underdogs, the national team has been touted to upset major odds and pose threats to the experienced Algeria and Senegal in their group stage battles.
Wanyama and the rest of the squad arrived in Cairo on Tuesday night having had a training camp in France for 19 days where they played two friendly matches, winning 1-0 against Madagascar and sharing the spoils in a 1-1 draw with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
