Sonko to Scrap Major Nairobi CBD Matatu Stage

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko's team has announced a plan to scrap Koja bus station in Nairobi CBD.

While appearing before the Nairobi County Transport Committee, County Transport and Roads chief officer Fredrick Karanja admitted that Koja bus station located at Old Nation would be moved to a new location at the Globe Roundabout.

He further explained that the move was necessary in order to ease traffic snarl-ups that are regularly experienced in the city.

“We are planning to get rid of the Old Nation matatu stage and have all the matatus using that stage moved to the land at Globe roundabout.

“The plan is to restore sanity on our roads and avert snarl-ups especially from vehicles accessing the city through the Globe Roundabout onto the Koja/old Nation stage. We will also create walkways in the streets within the CBD," stated Karanja.

With this change, public transport vehicles set to be affected include those that ply the lower Kabete, Village Market, Thika Road, Muchatha and Banana routes.

The stage previously acted as a parking bay for buses and that the plan would be implemented after conclusive consultations are carried out with the stakeholders.

“The move will be implemented soon and we are currently engaging stakeholders on the issue,” he added.

Karanja also told the committee that his team was planning consultative meetings with Kenya Railways in an attempt to acquire its lands located in Ngara for holding matatus.

“Kenya Railways has a free land in Ngara, the county could initiate talks and find a way in which it can be occupied by our matatus,” he added.

Luthuli Avenue will also remain free of vehicles and will continue functioning as a pedestrians walkway.
