Day VP Saitoti & Ass. Minister Almost Exchanged Blows

During a fundraiser at Moi Girls High School Isinya in November of 1989, violence broke out when late Vice President George Saitoti had a confrontation with late Internal Security Assistant Minister John Keen.

People Daily reported that during Saitoti's speech, he gave remarks that angered Keen to the point of waking up from his seat and charging at the VP.

Keen, who was trained by the British military, was restrained by security personnel before he got a hold of the VP.

Violence then erupted when their supporters clashed, beating each other mercilessly.

Keen demanded that the function be stopped but Saitoti, on the other hand, was adamant to keep the program running.

The District Commissioner rushed to the office of the school's headmistress and phoned Internal Security PS Hezekiah Oyugi to apprise him of the chaos.

Oyugi directed the DC to tell the fighting leaders to resolve their difference and restore peace.

Mkubwa amesema tupeleke maneno upande wa amani (The boss has ordered that peace be restored in the meeting)," the DC announced.

Calm was restored but what the DC didn't tell Saitoti and Keen was, that the boss he was referring to was not President Daniel Moi, but the PS who in fact, was junior to VP Saitoti and his Internal Security Assistant Minister Keen.

In another incident, Saitoti almost exchanged blows with President Uhuru Kenyatta who was then a Finance Minister in the Grand Coalition government in 2007.
