United States Ambassador to Kenya Kyle McCarter had to defend himself amid backlash from Kenyans after he tweeted a photo of two children, a girl and a boy, whose VISA applications to the US had been denied.
McCarter was trying to rally up the kids despite the unfortunate death of their dream.
“In the visa line yesterday I met this fine young boy and girl. They are Kenya Chess Champions! Although a trip to the US was not possible this time I reminded them that they are Champions & we are friends! This is the future of Kenya,” the diplomat tweeted.
His post did not please several Kenyans who were quick to blast him on the issue.
“Isn't that meant to be a priority for your office? There should be no gray areas in terms of VISA requirements. That's the only way the unsuccessful applicants won't feel shortchanged by the system that has already raked in millions in fees for the elusive VISA,” John Ogola questioned.
One Nginda was shocked at how the US continues to deny visas to eligible applicants, while Mosoku Geoffrey claimed to know of cases which Kyle’s predecessor (Bob Godec) used to intervene and help without violating any rule.
The backlash forced the ambassador to defend himself as he interacted with netizens, trying to convince them that he had no plot to sabotage the kids from acquiring VISAs.
“You got it. There was nothing I could do about the visa situation. What I was able to do is encourage them to keep striving to succeed in life. Going to the USA is not the solution to everyone’s problems,” McCarter responded to Joseph Ekale, who had joined a few Kenyans who were defending him.
However, Kenyans did not buy into his defence as they continued dressing him down.
“They were not going to the USA to solve their problems, they were going there to compete as equals,” a netizen dubbed Red, hit back.
