New details have emerged about the top security officer of former Nyeri Governor the late Wahome Gakuru.
Josphat Mwangi Maina who was giving orders to the governor's security detail and also worked as his private security was a police impostor.
The information came to light on Friday in an inquest that seeks to unravel the cause of the accident that killed the governor on November 7, 2017.
Maina, alias Baba Maina, was also said to have been instructing other staff in the governor’s office such as the driver, Chief Magistrate Wendy Kagendo heard.
Maina had been describing himself as Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) but was never a police officer.
After Gakuru was elected governor, the officers sent to his security detail revealed that they found the fake police working with the deceased.
The officers further told the court that Maina, having told them he was an SSP, which is a higher rank in the national police hierarchy, meant they couldn't question him as corporals.
Further details revealed that the alleged SSP was actually a class 4 drop out who worked for the governor out of their long-standing friendship.
The late governor’s sister, Margaret Wambui, also told the inquest Maina had introduced himself to her as an SSP in the DCI.
While defending himself from the accusations of claims of impersonating police, Maina claimed that he was a businessman in Nairobi and he was just a friend of the late governor since 1997 and help in his campaigns in 2013 and 2017.
