Uhuru Grants South Sudan 10 Acres of Land in Naivasha

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday announced a new deal that would see his government gift South Sudan with 10 acres of land in Naivasha.

Uhuru maintained that the grant was meant to foster trade relations with Kenya's neighbours as well as ease the clearing of goods headed to the youngest African nation.

"Kenya has responded to South Sudan request to have 10 acres of land set aside at the inland container depot in Naivasha industrial park to be used by their government as a dry port," Uhuru divulged.

He also declared that Kenya was fully committed to the Lapsset projects, promising to deliver berth 1 at the Lamu Port by August 2019, with berth 2 and 3 slated to be completed in 2020.

Uhuru was speaking at State House Nairobi where he played host to South Sudan President Salva Kiir.

Kiir arrived for his two-day state visit, making him the first South Sudanese head of state to do so.

During the formal welcome ceremony, the visiting president inspected a guard of honour mounted by a detachment of the Kenya Army.

During their joint address, Salva Kiir expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome, going on to disclose details of their closed-door meeting with Uhuru.

"President Uhuru and I had very fruitful discussions on a broad range of issues spanning from political, economic and security matters of mutual interest," Kiir affirmed.

The two neighbouring countries also disclosed a new pact that would involve setting up a joint committee of technical experts to tackle any border issues.

"It is also gratifying to note that we have now agreed on a framework for the engagement of border issues and technical teams from both countries will soon meet to start the process of solving border-related issues," the South Sudan President reiterated.
