FACT CHECK: Poll Showing Ruto Most Preferred Presidential Candidate is Fake

Leading research body, Ipsos Kenya, has issued out a statement dismissing polls doing rounds on social media showing the ranking of the most preferred presidential candidates if the election was to be conducted today.

Ipsos strongly condemned the doctored poll results terming it as fake, through an official statement shared to media houses.

"I refer to the alleged Ipsos false poll circulating today, 3rd July 2019, on social media platforms, purporting to rank preferred presidential candidates for 2022.

"The poll is fabricated. Ipsos did not at any time conduct or release such a poll as has been falsely reported," part of the statement read.

The research firm went ahead to disassociate itself with the fake results in the fictitious document doing rounds.

Below is the statement issued by Ipsos regarding the false poll.

In the fake poll, Deputy President William Ruto led the various politicians expected to vie in the upcoming election at 42% followed by Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko with 31%.

It goes on to list ANC party leader, Musalia Mudavadi, at 15% and his Wiper party counterpart, Kalonzo Musyoka, comes fourth with 7%.

KANU party leader, Gideon Moi, trails the ranking with a paltry 3% in the poll that has been shared especially on Twitter. The category labelled as "others" carries the remaining 2%.

Interestingly, the poll does not include ODM leader Raila Odinga, who is expected to be one of the leading contestants in 2022, if he vies for the presidency.

Ipsos often conducts research polls on different issues affecting the nation such as politics, economic state and various social affairs.
