ODM Legislators Plan to End Aukot's Referendum Bid

Legislators from both sides of the two houses, the Senate and the National Assembly, have started taking notice of the bid by the Thirdway Alliance to push for constitutional change.

This has elicited mixed reactions from the MPs and Senators with some throwing their weight behind the move, but others totally disowning the bid.

Several ODM MPs have called on their supporters to ignore the Ekuru Aukot-led Thirdway Alliance's move to have a referendum.

Senate Minority Leader James Orengo, MPs Otiende Amollo (Rarieda) and Opiyo Wandayi (Ugunja), who were in Siaya over the weekend, urged their electorate to otherwise consider supporting the proposal by the Building Bridges Initiative(BBI).

Speaking separately during a fundraiser in aid of Bondo United Football team in Bondo town on Sunday, East African Legislative Assembly representative Oburu Oginga told off Aukot on his referendum bid.

"Aukot should consult widely to come up with a negotiated referendum. His idea is dead on arrival,” Oburu noted.

"I ask MCAs to use every means possible to stop the referendum. We have boycotted elections before and we can also do this to the referendum by Aukot," he added.

His sentiments were echoed by MPs Elisha Odhiambo (Gem) and Samuel Atandi (Alego Usonga).

"People cannot just wake up and demand a referendum. We will amend the constitution through consultation," stated Mr Atandi.

Odhiambo reiterated the fact that Kenyans should wait for BBI report.

On the other hand, some Jubilee legislators, including Senate Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen, have thrown their weight behind the Punguza Mizigo proposal.
