A police officer attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) was, on Wednesday, arrested after he was caught receiving a bribe valued at Ksh 200,000.
In a statement released on Thursday, the officer, Corporal Daniel Arimba Rioba, demanded and received the bribe in order to secure the release of an official from Treasury, who he claimed was being pursued.
The Standard later reported that the victim of the bribery syndicate was established to be the driver to outgoing Treasury CS, Henry Rotich.
One other suspect escaped and the officers are still looking for him.
"Corporal Daniel Arimba Rioba, a Police officer attached to Kamukunji Police Station, was yesterday arrested for demanding and receiving Ksh. 200,000 to secure the release of an employee of the Ministry of Treasury whom they claimed was under investigations in corruption-related cases," read the statement in part.
The officer was pounced on by his colleagues outside the National Treasury Building while he was still waiting for the payment from a businessman.
"The said officer, together with another who escaped, went further to arrest another businessman at the National Treasury Building on allegations of forgery and demanded Ksh 100,000 to secure his release," continued the statement.
In the wake of the arrest, DCI urged all members to always demand identification from officers whenever an arrest is happening in order to ascertain that they are legit.
"The DCI urges members of the public to always insist on being shown the Certificate of Appointment (C.o.A) whenever anyone purports to be a DCI officer and if still in doubt, to ask for the telephone number of their immediate boss to call and confirm the identity," cautioned the statement.
On Monday, 28 employees were arrested and charged in connection with the Arror and Kimwarer dams scandal.
Among the most notable suspects included outgoing Treasury CS, Henry Rotich, and his PS, Kamau Thugge.
