Day Waititu Hid in Sonko's Car Boot to Avoid Arrest

Kiambu Governor, Ferdinand Waititu, is not shy of controversies as he faces charges of abuse of office and misuse of public funds in his county.

On September 25, 2012, while serving as Embakasi MP, he pulled a fast one on police officers who had mounted a checkpoint outside parliament gates in a bid to arrest him.

Waititu had been accused of inciting his constituents against the Maasai community in Nairobi's Kayole estate.

The controversial politician managed to slip away from the trap that had been set to nab him as it emerged he could face murder charges.

Reports then suggested that the former MP hid inside Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko's car boot to avoid the contingent of police hunting for him.

According to a report by Daily Nation, on September 26 2012, the officers inspected every vehicle that was exiting the August house but all in vain, as the then assistant minister for water managed to slip away.

Reports further indicated that Waititu might have covered himself and lay low inside Sonko's boot as the police just inspected the car drivers and their passengers.

The National Security Intelligence Service (NSIS) officers, who were after the MP, accused Waititu's colleagues, parliament police and other parliament staff of assisting his escape.

Then acting Nairobi Provincial Police Officer, Moses Ombati, noted that the officers were also perplexed by how Waititu managed to escape the laid trap net.

It was estimated that he slipped out of the parliament compound at around 9:30 pm avoiding the police and media cameras that were eagerly waiting for him to show up.

The Kiambu Governor later surrendered himself to police and was charged with hate speech, which led to him losing his job as an assistant minister.

He was then released on a Ksh1 million cash bail.
